Technique plates solve the beginner's paradox: a new lifter needs the bar at full height to learn pulls from the floor, but cannot lift full-size weights. These give an empty-bar-strength lifter proper 450 mm geometry at 2.5 or 5 kg, in a plastic tough enough to be dropped by the people most likely to drop it.
